TEENS/YOUNG ADULTS & CREDIT

The main goal here is to get teens and young adults to think about finances early on in life. Not often finance is being talk about within the family. We say the family is on a budget all the time but do we sit down as a family and work on the budget. Do we have budgeting things for our teens to practice? There are many tools around the house we can use to start a budget. The family that budgets together survives together during tough economic times. The goal with our teens and credit program is to get teens thinking outside the box.

First, they need to understand why is it essential to have great credit and live on a budget. So, often we talk with them about the value of a dollar. In which we should be talking to them about the time value of money. There are many simple things we can start off with interest, compound interest, principle, and etc. If we can teach teens and young adults the simple things with money the more complex situation will be easier to handle. Because the situation that are more complex happens only because the greater the debt obligation.

Secondly, we want them to understand that the math doesn't change it is still add, subtract, mutiple, and divided. We just have to learn how to use the new system better for each debt obligation. I want to change the mind set of our teens and young adults. When it comes to debt I don't want them to live in fear of interest instead they learn to control the debt obligation through education. They need to understand that debt is not bad but not knowing how to take control of debt is bad. Also, not understanding the difference between bad debt and good debt is the problem. That good debt can offset bad debt in your favor. Sometime we have to rethink things and not go into panic mode. No, more panic mode each teen and young adult will learn new technique's.

Thirdly, there will be seven (7) topics to discuss and one in home excercise to do. The home exercise can be done with real or play money. That depends on the parent that is participating.

    Topics:

  1. Understanding Credit and Collections
  2. Understanding the Banking System
  3. Understanding Car Loans
  4. Understanding Student Loans
  5. Understanding Credit Monitoring
  6. Understanding Debt Cards, Credit Card, Secured Cards
  7. Car Loan Excel Spread Sheet
  8. College Budget Excel Spread Shet

Finally, these are areas if learn properly as a teen and young adults it make life much easier during the stages of teen years through young adult years. So, family, church leaders, educators, community leaders, and activist it takes a village to raise our teenagers through young adult hood. But, what are we raising them to learn is the question in today's times. Our economic status is going backwards because the new trends of today are not being taught in the inner city communities and homes in America.
